Audiobook Appreciation Month is an annual celebration that takes place throughout June and is one of our favourite calendar events! Our wonderful community already recognise the value and potential of audiobooks — not only as a legitimate form of reading but also as an accessible and enjoyable format for children. However, the goal of this event is to increase awareness and engagement with the format to those less familiar with it.

Music Audio Stories - Audiobooks for children
Transport your little one into a musical storytelling world that will entertain, ignite their imagination, and boost creativity, language and listening skills.

Audiobooks are fun, easy to use and a great way to entertain and teach children. Listening to audios is an enjoyable and accessible non-screen-time entertainment tool that you can use as a healthy activity for your children and the entire family to enjoy together. There are many ways children benefit from listening to our music audiobooks and we have highlighted some of them below...

On The Go

Music Audio Stories are great when you're on the go, especially during car journeys. You can create a fun family experience by listening together via your car speakers or use headphones on an individual device. This is also a help for children who suffer from carsickness and need to avoid staring at a book or a screen.

Make Chores Fun

Speed up mundane chores and make them more enjoyable. You may find it’s easier to entice your child into doing their chores when you let them know that they can listen to fun musical audiobooks!

Bedtime Stories

Children love magical bedtime stories but what if you haven't finished your day's work, or need to put your feet up for a few quiet minutes and your little one simply won’t settle down? You can avoid blue light being emitted from a screen or bright lights left on for reading, and instead, soothe your little one's imagination, promote relaxation and send them off into a peaceful sleep with our stories.

The History of Audiobook Appreciation Month

Many of us don’t know this but audiobooks have been around for a long time now. When Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, he wanted to record books on it so that reading could become accessible for the visually challenged. He developed the idea of a phonographic book and lobbied at the Royal Institution in Britain to make these books easily accessible. To demonstrate his point, Edison recorded a verse of Alfred Tennyson’s poetry that was played for the attendees.

However, Edison’s phonographic books had a limited capacity and could not record clips that were longer than 4 minutes. This meant that it was insufficient for the recording of long chapter books. In the 1970s, when 60-minute cassettes were developed, it became possible to record longer literary works. But it wasn’t until the invention of the CD that audiobooks came into being. As memory expanded, users no longer had to worry about a lack of space for their recordings. A single CD was capable of containing volumes of books. With time, audiobooks started becoming available on music streaming apps as well as apps built solely for listening to audiobooks.

About 40% of all audiobooks are consumed through public libraries, while the rest are sold online and at retail bookstores. Library download programs have also seen rapid growth as these public libraries offer free downloadable audiobooks. Audiobooks have also been proven to increase general literacy. Audiobook Appreciation Month celebrates the wonderful development of audiobooks over the years and the way this format has helped millions of people read their favorite books day after day!
