Music Audio Stories makes Comic Con history on a very special weekend.
Last weekend was a BIG weekend for Music Audio Stories. In fact, we made Comic Con history when our new children's picture book appeared at two of the largest events in Europe at the same time!
As most of you know, I have been creating a buzz in London with my fun, interactive, musical Storytime all year. I have had sell-out workshops at libraries and festivals and my Storytime is in demand. Meanwhile, my illustrator, Jenika Ioffreda, has been creating a buzz of her own. A well-known name in the Comic Con scene, this talented artist has been making appearances all over Europe.
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of performing my Storytime for the children on Sunday, twice, at MCM London Comic Con. It was absolutely brilliant and I had to pinch myself several times, as I couldn't believe that I was there as an entertainer.
While my Music Audio Story was playing loudly through ExCel London, Jenika had been invited as a special guest to attend Malta Comic Con and was over there, signing copies of the book. It was a weekend we will not forget!
Storytime at The Treehouse
I rolled into ExCel London, with my purple suitcase full of Storytime things, at around 4 pm on Thursday for set up. I had seen ExCel in set-up mode previously when I attended MCM in May for my first book signing event with Jenika. It was cool seeing the artists and creators wheeling their things in and setting up for the show. The Treehouse and the Family Lounge area has a magical forest setting, complete with bean bags, little tables, sunflowers and a tree at its centre point.
I began my Storytime with a read-aloud of the Billy Joins the Circus picture book through a microphone. I've never done this before! As I have mentioned in other blog posts about my Storytime, this story has a song in it and I chose to sing it instead of reading it. So my singing was also heard through MCM too! Boy, I really need to keep my vocals a bit sharper if this singing business continues!
Then, the Billy Joins the Circus music audiobook was played and the children loved singing and dancing along. The situation at this event was very different from any other I have done before.
There were a lot of distractions but I still managed to teach the children about the circus and I was impressed with how well they managed to keep focused throughout my session.
I then encouraged the children to create their own drawings of the story, using my Big Top templates. There were some amazing drawings and this part of my Storytime led nicely into the other art and craft activities going on in The Treehouse for children to take part in.
As with all of my events this year, I learned a lot. I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and ways of developing and this year has been great for that. I absolutely LOVED my Storytime at MCM London Comic Con. I was already a fan of the event, so to have had the opportunity to take part in it twice, with my Storytime and Book Signing earlier this year, is a dream come true for me.
I won't be doing another Storytime this year, however, I still have two exciting Book Signings this month, including Olympia London at London Comic Con Winter!
BIG thank you to Charlotte who clearly is a rock star and to Aff, Megan and Johnny for their help.
What a weekend!
